As the World Burns: Siberian Wild Fires Have Global Repercussions

Summer means fire season across much of the world, but the 2016 Siberian wildfires are heading toward infamy. And they ‘re delivering devastating consequences well beyond Russia. Hotter summers like this year’s increase wildfires’ severity and scathe more acreage.  Siberia’s boreal forests store huge amounts of carbon dioxide that enter the atmosphere as the trees burn. What’s more, black soot and ash land on snow and ice to absorb more sunlight.  Arctic ice melts faster while all of these effects accelerate the vicious cycle of global climate change.  Even if your backyard isn’t in flames, know that Siberia’s problems are shared by all of us.
