Best Hikes and Drives in the U.S. for Fall Foliage

There’s an undeniable magic about autumn. Summer heat relents, replaced by a welcome crispness; the landscape is alight with bursts of reds, yellows, oranges and purples. Whether you’re a diehard fan of foliage or simply looking for a fall drive with a view, these spots prompt autumnal adventure.

Aspen – Colorado

The name says it all. No respectable list ignores the incredible aspens of Colorado. What better place to view the golden groves than a place named after them? Hike, backpack, climb—and definitely include a drive over Kebler Pass. The aspen’s heart-shaped leaves turn a rich yellow hue, appearing as flecks of gold shimmering in sunlit trees.

Best time to visit: mid-September

Adirondack Mountains – New York

Here, a diverse portfolio of autumn foliage outperforms Wall Street for pure joy. The maple, birch, aspen and oak trees of the Adirondacks each earn their place. Sweeping along the Olympic Trail Scenic Byway, this riveting road runs right through Lake Placid. Take time to get out of the car, stretch your legs and picnic alongside the serene water.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park – Tennessee

For a jaw-dropping display of color, Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of our favorite spots. With a plethora of native trees, the park turns shades of red, burgundy, purple and orange starting in early fall. Over 800 miles of scenic roads and hiking trails give visitors more than enough to see and do.

Harbor Springs – Michigan

Harbor Springs boasts an actual “Tunnel of Trees” (otherwise called M-119), a scenic route calling out for crisp fall drives and picturesque bike rides. A year-round attraction, the road is most enchanting when the lush trees are aflame with autumn colors.

The Enchantments – Washington

Enchantment Lakes is aptly named with bright gold yellow larches saturating the majestic hills and mountains. The bracing hike to the lakes is enveloped by such fields, making for a breathtaking stroll. The yellow tones appear more remarkable with their stark contrast to the mountains’ grey granite.

Glacier National Park – Montana

Amazing Glacier National Park becomes a paradise in fall. Glacier is nearly empty by the end of September/ early October for beauty with unmatched solitude. Wide-open spaces morph into golden fields of larches and scorching red maples.  All set against the rugged, snowcapped mountains of the Continental Divide.

Best time to visit: early October

Lake of the Ozarks – Missouri

Smack dab in the middle of the country, the Ozarks possess some of the densest and most brightly colored autumn leaves. Enjoy the lake while towering crags create a rugged backdrop.  Don’t ignore the local hospitality and off-season lodging rates.

Best time to visit: late October

Kancamagus Highway – New Hampshire

New England is famous for its fall colors. The Kancamagus Highway, though difficult to pronounce, produces some of the best fall foliage in the United States. This byway extracts you from the hustle and bustle courtesy of White Mountain National Forest.
