Riding With Risk: Colorado Supreme Court rules on avalanche liability

While in-bounds avalanche fatalities are few at U.S. resorts, the court case spurred by a 2012 fatality at Winter Park upheld the 1979 Ski Safety Act, since amended in 1990 and 2004.  Shielding resort operators from liability attached to “snow conditions as they exist or may change,” the 5-2 ruling — covered extensively by the Denver Post — is a yet another reminder that stoke lovers need to take personal responsibility for assessing conditions. Even inside the ropes.
