As reported on June 28th by TechCrunch, a Brooklyn-based startup is fencing off their own Field of Dreams, this time to raise leather to end up in ball gloves, apparel and outdoor footwear. The product, biologically identical to what cattle grow, is purported to offer designers choices in factors such as thickness and flexibility. Surrounded by cafes and brewpubs swarming the New York City area, Modern Meadow’s immediate mission is to turn a good idea into a commercially-viable process. With global leather sales projected to hit $91.2 billion by 2018, there’s plenty of room for sustainable options.
