High Sierra Olmsted Elmwood Rucksack

Field Notes: Day packs don’t have to be overly technical. The High Sierra Olmsted Elmwood Rucksack is a perfect example of everyday carry pack that is equally at home bike commuting to work on the Lakefront Trail in Chicago, climbing Mt. Sanitas in Boulder or getting to class on time at Appalachian State. Whether a day pack for outdoor pursuits or as an everyday carry, this pack excels and looks good doing it. 

The Olmsted has an open top with flap closure, which isn’t the most secure option but it functions well. Inside there is organization for everything you carry on a daily basis – laptop, keys, business cards and phone. Three zippered exterior access pockets are ideal for stashing cords for your electronics. A single side panel stow pocket holds a standard Kleen Kanteen bottle perfectly. The muted color scheme doesn’t scream technical outdoors but the Olmsted Elmwood makes up for that in the style department, which hits the mark. Chicagoans and city dwellers from all walks will appreciate the interior print. Leather accent zipper pulls and grab handle are a perfect complement to the durable canvas. Loaded up, this day pack is comfortable because of the wide shoulder straps and padded back paneling. 

Pros: The best interior organization of any pack in our day pack reviews, including a padded laptop sleeve. 

Cons: Be wary of the metal latch on the sternum strap. Use it or lose it, lest you lose a tooth when the strap swings around. 

Tester Comments: “This High Sierra backpack is my new everyday carry pack. I dig the design and style. It’s not overly technical and not overtly aiming to be a heritage look. I’m not sure if I would ever take this pack on a hike because of its weight, but packed with towels and a speaker for a day at the beach or loaded up for a sunset picnic would be an ideal setting for the Olmsted.”
