Four season use and versatile situations

Description

Field Notes: Out in the field, the pack performed well in every test. The very best feature of the Ruckus is the roll-top opening. Without a zipper to access the main compartment, testers didn’t fret about overloading this pack to the point where a zipper could break. The widemouth roll-top allows for larger items like a soft-cooler full of your favorite beverages or a padded camera case to be easily loaded. The benefit of the roll-top testers liked most was that the pack could be sized for whatever use, from a quick overnight backpacking trip to fast peak bagging – the roll top can size the pack from about 18L through 28L, increasing the range of uses.

Design-wise the Ruckus utilizes a full length plastic framesheet, which gives the pack structure and adds stability when fully loaded. The large and comfortable hip fins are made of foam and mesh as are the pads strategically placed at the wear points around the shoulders and kidneys for all-day comfort. Mesh stretch side pockets are ideal for water bottles and energy bars, while an external stretch stash pocket stows a wind or rain shell for easy access. The external access hydration sleeve allows for refills without emptying and repacking the entire day pack. With gear loops and attachment points for hiking poles, a piolet or a ground pad, the Kelty Ruckus is a 4-season capable day pack.

Pros: The versatility was unmatched by anything we tested, and carry comfort owing to its thoughtful and feature-rich construction make the Ruckus a truly exceptional design.

Cons: The shoulder straps attach to the top of the pack with an inch or so of webbing allowing them to twist easily without adding any adjustability. Given the capacity, a larger hipbelt would add some stability and carry comfort.

Tester Comments: “The roll top is simplicity in design at its best. Why complicate what doesn’t need to be.”
