Description

Field Notes: This streamlined helmet is built around standard in-mold technology that laminates the outer shell to a foam interior. Active Junky’s ridden Lazer helmets throughout North and South America with no problems with any helmets’ structural integrity. This outer shell is comparable to other performance models and relies upon a series of longitudinal, curved surfaces to spread impact force. Rigidity comes from recessed bridges strategically located front-to-back at a 90-degree angle to the main helmet panels. Noteworthy is the rear impact protection on the bike helmet, with dual oval-shaped structures on both right and left.

Balance is much like that of other performance road bike helmets, with slightly more forward tip based upon the 40g weight of the processing and charging unit at the 280g helmet’s back; we estimate the extra tilt pressure at 15%-20% above “dumb” helmets. Ventilation tops the charts both with outside venting as well as the inside space created because of the suspension system; a total of 19 vents cover an estimated 40% of the helmets surface area. Lifebeam’s retention system is Lazer’s proprietary Rollsys configuration that creates superior anchoring without pressure points or restriction of air movement. More like a trapeze than simple straps, wires or banding, Rollsys is a more three-dimensional approach to personalized fitting that is durable enough to tackle hard and frequent rides (although it is perhaps too finicky for younger children to wear).

Anchored more deeply in the foam liner than nearly any other helmet, the headband creates a platform for tensioning using the top rear dial. Tensioning and release are done continuously (without incremental ratcheting) for unlimited variability as the helmet tightens gradually around the entire head unlike others that focus on the back of the head exclusively. Chin strap is standard issue except for the integration of the rear anchor into the Rollsys design to move into proper position as the tensioning knob is turned. The approach gives the helmet a greater sense of confidence even before the chin strap is secured plus the headstrap length is bombproof with Lazer’s locking hardware.

This is truly a performance cycling helmet aerodynamically as well because the electronics do not impede downhill speed or create crosswind resistance. Visibility ranks the same as conventional road bike helmets. For heart rate monitoring, optical technology in the headband is centered on the forehead. Additionally, a 3-axis accelerator is incorporated into the sensor. Electronics are water-resistant and rated to operate between 23 and 113 degrees; Active Junky testing ranged from the low 50s to high 80s in Colorado’s Rockies.

As the wireless heart rate monitor syncs up via fitness and training smartphone apps versus Bluetooth alone, it’s important to understand which programs are compatible; the options include most standard GPS-connected systems such as Strava Cycling and Map My Ride. Synching happens quickly and nearly automatically once set up with the app using ANT+ and BLE (Bluetooth low energy). Sensor range goes from 30BPM to 220BPM and power is via rechargeable 170mAh lithium polymer battery that’s capable of numerous rides and is rated for a 17-hour working life per charge. The covered charging port resists water, wind and dust. Power switch and blue status LED are easily accessed and visible while the audible alert is clear and obvious. Two sizes are available with matte black and white color options and triple certification includes CE, CPSC and AS.

Tester Comments: “Even with aggressive riding, I’ve never had a problem with the tensioning system even in high-vibration, washboard road scenarios. Other than the brow pad, the padding is sensibly nominal on the helmet’s top as little pressure is applied there. This kind of comfort makes it easier to ride longer and take full advantage of Lifebeam’s tech.”
