Description

Field Notes: Riding the Nutcase Tracer requires little thought – but an appreciation for uncluttered quality in an appealing package. An in-mold PC shell solidly integrates with the EPS form liner as moderate liner thickness allows Tracer to keep a clean profile while still being prepared for minor and major impact incidences. Testers liked the minimalist interior padding to generate a feeling of 360-degree connection and protection with Tracer.

The biking helmet didn’t feel vulnerable in any direction; three variable-thickness padding sets come with every Nutcase helmet. A minimalist head tensioning system doesn’t compromise on durability with an incremental dial system that locks in quickly without encouraging under-tightening. The comfort of the headband promotes a slightly snugger fit for increased stability even with sudden head movements that are part of urban riding (awareness, really).

Nutcase’s CoolControlTM vent closure system manages the top six “asterisk-configured” vents, reflecting the Company’s rainy weather Portland roots that helps manage precip, external and internal temperatures. Four always-open vents add to airflow even when top vents are shuttered. Tracer carries the signature Fidlock magnetic locking system that’s been a standout in previous testing, suitable for wet, gloved or iPhone-full hands. With under-chin padding on the quadruple-thickness webbing, getting Tracer snug doesn’t mean sacrificing comfort.

Strap adjustment is among the easiest and most secure, with dual locks on both sides to personalize the ear “triangle” for positive lateral and longitudinal stability. Positioning sunglasses takes some tweaking with the removable cloth visor shield in place. Visibility is good as urban, commuting helmets need to provide contact with the environment in all directions. Plenty of room for ears means staying alert and improves side venting in the angular, geometric cut-outs. Two, wide-ranging sizes make choosing simple while six colorways promote enhanced visibility as do the 3M reflective straps and dial insert.

Tester Comments: “Love cruising local bike paths and venturing into town with Tracer. My single-speed is the top choice for ‘pairing’ the cycling helmet. There’s no beating the magnetic clip system as I’m on and off the bike running errands.”
