Description

Field Notes: It was almost unfair – we rode the Specialized Fatboy Pro Trail after a few laps on far less expensive models, and the difference was night-and-day … or more aptly, tank-and-racecar. While enthusiasts might not think so, the serious riders and racers for whom this Specialized Fat Bike is designed will revel in the extreme jump-in quickness and agility, and the ease with which it scampers uphill.

Pros: The Fatboy Pro Trail is teaming with pros: The spec level is racing quality, including almost top-end drivetrain components from SRAM’s X0-1 and Shimano’s XT lines. Pair that with the versatile frame design and highly capable RockShox fork that can soak up the rough stuff without sacrificing speed and quickness – and you get a fast and very agile trail Fat Bike.

Cons: The $4300 price tag seems a bit high for this bike considering its weight is definitely not among the lightest in the category – something we think could be remedied by a slightly slimmer wheelset, among other options. There are certainly cheaper-priced Fat Bikes out there that could rival the performance of this model.

Tester Quote: “When I first jumped on the Fatboy bike I had to back off a bit because I found myself flicking the front end around like a dog with a toy! It was so much lighter than the others, and the geo allowed me to pull up over obstacle with just a slight backward lean. Once I settled in I found it highly nimble and a blast to ride.”

Key Attribute: Ride Quality

Bottom Line: If you’re ready to make a serious commitment to Fat Biking, and might consider racing on one or possibly making this your only bike, the Specialized Fatboy Pro Trail is fast, agile and a fairly lightweight machine that handles XC- or Trail-style terrain with aplomb. Because of this bike’s full-size 4.6” Fat tires and 90mm wide rims it can also transition well onto snowy trails or deep sand and mud, unlike some of the narrower-wheeled options. However, the price may be a bit high, so look around for similar builds elsewhere before committing.
