Hood up or down, a well-conceived hoodie handles weather and temperature changes in style. Active Junky took these three travel hoodies to South America and came back ready to zip, pull and go.
super.natural Essential Full Zip Hoody
Active Junky’s been a fan of this brand’s wool and synthetic baselayers since last summer. Not ones to shy away from hoodies, testers found Essential durable enough to handle travel scenarios and multi-sport days. Nearly half Merino wool, the hoody’s full-length zipper and generous hood meant guarding against Chilean sun, wind and sub-freezing temps; snapbacks and beanies are welcome. Low volume front curved pockets functioned best as handwarmers on this quick-drying piece. Pair it with the lightweight, flat-lock stitched BASE TEE for a powerful, damp- and stink-resistant duo that’s compatible with a non-stop active lifestyle.
Best For: Everyday activity, multi-sport domestic and international agendas
Voormi High-E Hoodie Starting at: $220.76
Whether or not you know it, sheep roam the Rocky Mountain high country as you sleep. Fear not, as these generous creatures contribute to an adventure-loving wool, poly, nylon and Lycra blend unique to Voormi. A trio of technologies mean superior weather resistance without sacrificing a softer hand and flowing fit: the tech being Dual Surface Precision Blended Wool, Surface Hardened Thermal and Technical Wool. Testers in South America reached for American-made High-E when temps dropped, winds kicked in and the team gathered around firepits. Hard to describe while easy to wear, this piece is at the center of a growing collection of singular weaves and designs that stretch, repel, protect and secure in marginal and changing conditions.
Best For: Cool-to-cold, teaming with a hardshell for on-mountain, all-season capability
Bergans of Norway Engrapp Wool Zip Hood
Bergan’s burst on to the U.S. scene a few years ago as only the Norwegians can, bringing pragmatic products, solid construction and a trimmer, athletic fit. Engrapp is part of a tradition that’s pushed hard and long for polar firsts; every detail in this 100% Merino wool hoody says extreme. Comfort doesn’t come out at the back of the (ice) pack either with a soft hand and flowing fit. Testers wore it alone, over a Skala Tee and under a hardshell for freedom of movement without losing warmth. Frequent washings produced little pilling, hem stretch or seam fatigue, another reason it’s no surprise that the Engrapp won a spot on Active Junky’s best travel hoodies list. Even sun-torched days on South American volcanoes matched Engrapp’s easy-breathing weave and multisport adaptability. Thumb holes lock into place while the zipper glides effortlessly.
Side note: B.O.N.’s icon is among the most evocative on the market.
Best For: Backcountry travel, multisport adventure
