Field Notes
We pushed this Granite Gear Lutsen close to its 40-lbs load rating, lugging multiple gallons of water into a desiccated zone in Canyonlands National Park. While the Lutsen gets the job done, it’s much better as a fast and light pack than a heavy load carrier.
Pros
The top-loading pack has features testers relished. First off, skinny straps and buckles increased customization and fit while cutting weight to bring Lutsen in at only 50 ounces as one of the lightest packs tested. The straps – in addition to the rear stretch panel (which easily fit a lightweight 2-person tent) – increase carrying capacity beyond the 55L mark. Water bottle holders and a hydration sleeve add to the equation. A customizable harness and a firm foam framesheet advance the fast, light and functional mission. Also, the pack is made from high-tenacity, DWR-treated nylons to eliminate the need for a rain cover in mist and moderate drizzle.
Cons
Durability was a concern with this Granite Gear model as one buckle snapped on the first trip we took. Note: Lutsen used smaller buckles than all other packs tested in Utah.
Favorite Feature
The external stretch pocket topped the list of features to multiply the utility of this backpack. Stash a rain jacket or stow a tent, this spacious stretch pocket gets the job done.
Tester Comment
“I usually hike with a 65L. This 55L felt slick and speedy—I could really crank up the pace with this backpack. Definitely one of my top picks and a solid choice if 55L is the right volume and you aren’t lugging over 35 lbs.”
Bottom Line
A pack for fast and light hikers with features that make a big difference on the trail.
