MSR XGK EX

Field Notes: We put this one through its paces all over Utah and Colorado, specifically on winter camping expeditions in the Wasatch and throughout the desert. MSR XGK has been synonymous with expedition kitchens for nearly four decades, and the new and improved EX brings many features that made the original a hit back to the table. 

Pros: From white gas to kerosene, diesel to gasoline, the XGK EX gets things cooking. Not only are the multi-fuel capabilities of the XGK EX top notch, but the stability offered by the incredibly burly yet retractable arms is phenomenal. Active Junky testers used a number of different pots and fuel types and, while boiling times varied, testers were always impressed. As practical as it is adaptable, the XGK EX is relatively easy to adjust and maintain in the field. It comes with a heat reflector, windscreen and a small but sufficient parts kit.

Cons: Unfortunately, all this burly adaptability comes at a price: a toll in extra ounces. At slightly over a pound, the XGK EX is significantly bulkier than most of the other backpacking stoves reviewed. 

Favorite Feature: The legs are some of the most stable we’ve ever tested. From setting it up on icy ledges, frozen logs and desert slickrock, testers ascertained that with the XGK EX, they would always be able to find a way to get through the night. 

Tester Commentary: “Normally, melting snow to boil water can be a real hassle. It was a delight to light up the XGK every morning, and get the day started by melting what had frozen over the night before. I’ve always been a Whisperlite guy, and this is definitely heavier, but you worry a lot less about a potential mechanical issue.”

Bottom Line: An update to an expedition-proven model, the XGK EX has a long future ahead of it. 

Best for: Picking a reliable 4-season, multi-fuel camp stove that lasts at least as long as you do
