Field Notes: Although the snow was yet to fly when Active Junky testers took this Ortovox backpack to its native environment on snowy mountain trails, we’ve spent enough time on snow to know the elements that make a solid ski touring pack. Ortovox, with its roots in building avalanche rescue equipment, is all about safety, and that bleeds through to its pack designs as well. Meticulously thought-out and well-designed, each element of this pack is purpose-built. The Haute Route 32 is constructed with a flexible back panel frame, which provides structure and stability to the day pack.
One of the elements Active Junky reviewers loved about the pack was the opening back panel, which zips open from hip to hip with full and easy access to the main interior compartment. The sturdy back system is complemented by a wraparound waist belt and wide shoulder straps that are angled for comfort. The Haute Route is feature rich and includes an interior hydration sleeve, ski latching points for A-frame and diagonal carry, ice tool attachment points, an optics compartment, hip-fin pocket for valuables, and a stowaway mesh helmet holder on the exterior. Lastly, a dedicated rescue tools compartment is signaled by red zipper pulls for easy recognition in an emergency situation. The compartment has labeled slots for an avalanche probe, shovel handle and blade. Bottom line is the Haute Route is a perfect tool for ski tourers.
Pros: Organization. Everything is right where you need it to be.
Cons: This Ortovox backpack needs to be packed wisely as the center of gravity can be pushed further out from the back if heavier items are not stowed properly.
Tester Comments: “When loaded up and strapped down, The Haute Route feels like an extension of the body. Carry comfort is superb, which will aid backcountry skiers when balance and stability are at a premium on exposed and steep terrain.”
