The Orvis Encounter fly rod outfit is an affordable option that performs well for beginners. At the price, you’d be hard-pressed to find anything better. With a rod, reel, line, backing, and leader for $159 (everything aside from flies and tippet you need to get started), getting out on the water has never been more accessible.
Active Junky put the Orvis Encounter outfit to the test, from tiny Utah streams to larger rivers, lakes and reservoirs. We loved the smooth drag of the reel, the crisp flex of the rod and the durable carrying case. The Encounter Outfit comes in four size/weight options, and Active Junky recommends either the 8’6” or 9’ 5-weight. We loved the 9’, but smaller folks or those regularly fishing smaller streams may want to consider the shorter option.
The graphite Encounter rod is smooth for beginner casting. Slightly stiffer than whippy, but with plenty of flex in the tip, we found it was comfortable in everything from slinging heavy streamers to delicately placing dry flies. The cork grip is comfortable and has proven durable throughout months of testing.
The reel is made from a composite plastic material (not the highest end construction), which isn’t surprising given the $159 price, but it feels solid and has withstood a few drops. It’s lightweight, the adjustable drag is smooth and the look is easy to love.
The Encounter line is a weight-forward floating line, which entry-level testers appreciated. The profile makes it much easier for beginner and intermediate anglers to make longer casts and drop the fly in tough spots. Floating line is versatile for dry flies, nymphs and even most streamers.
Overall, the Encounter outfit has thoroughly impressed Active Junky. We’d recommend it for anyone getting into fly fishing, or even experienced anglers looking for a backup.
