Field Notes

Tested on multi-day trips in the southwest and beyond, the Osprey Ariel 75 was selected as best backpack for women thanks to its archetypical Osprey adjustability, comfortable support of the frame and well-conceived features.

Pros

The Ariel has plenty of space along with smart organizational features. Take water carrying, for instance. A hydration pack pocket is matched by side water bottle holders. The brain detaches and turns into a daypack. The front outer pocket is spacious and handy while external straps and pulls encourage the user to boost carrying capacity. Compared to other packs, the Ariel appeared to be more durable and better designed. Scrambles through tight sandstone canyons ripped and tore the fabric of other packs tested while Ariel pushed through the thorniest of scenarios (including sharp thickets) without a scratch. The hip and shoulder support walks the line between too cushy and overly firm, an ideal balance between structure and comfort.

Cons

The Ariel, while exceedingly adjustable, isn’t easy to tweak as the Velcro back panel is finicky to make minor adjustments. Once properly dialed, the Osprey maintains adjustment until the wearer is ready to make changes.

Favorite Feature

Ariel’s removable brain transforms into a winning lumbar pack to eliminate the need for a separate daypack. The lumbar fit is suited for exploring around basecamp or a day hike when packed with food, water, and a few essentials.

Tester Comment

“One of the best packs I’ve ever carried including an old model of the Ariel used for the past 5+ years. To say it’s treated me well is an understatement. The hip belt and removable brain seal the deal and the pack’s construction is executed with impeccable attention to detail. I’ve loved my old one so this year’s updates make a great pack better.”

Bottom Line

If your budget permits, the Ariel is worth considering, whether the 75L model or a smaller version. Down to every zipper and stitch, the Ariel was a two thumbs up winner on the trail.
