Bringing above-average wind protection to breezes and major blows, the jacket stood up to precip ranging from sea spray to destructive downpours. With higher pocket placement for easy access when worn with waistbelts, the lightweight jacket’s ability to stretch and move made it a delight to wear. Active Junky found the 3L AscentShell fabric compared favorably to Gore and eVent options as underarm panels boosted the breathability in the fully-secured mode. A sturdy storm flap backed up the reliable, single-pull zipper that remained easy to operate even with wet and gloved hands. The helmet-style, wire-brimmed hood? Pure alpine insight.

Pros: Dual front pockets ideal (one sealed for storage and the other mesh-backed for ventilation), hood is bomber in tough weather

Cons: Back length nominal for bad weather, cuff adjustment tabs on the aggressive side for holding power 

Tester Comments: “Realm was run in the summer rain and humidity in North Carolina plus stuck out in the wind during hikes on Colorado ridgelines. Never got overheated, cold or soggy from the inside. The Outdoor Research Realm is easy to tune for conditions and personal comfort. I’d expected the lack of pit zips to limit the jacket, but it never happened. One of best investments in outerwear on the market right now.”
