Testers were quick to grab the REI Flash 65—and faster still on the trail. This lightweight backpack proved its versatility both in the snow-capped La Sals and in the slickrock-strewn desert below.
This pack is light and comfortable, thanks to a minimalist construction and mesh-reinforced suspension system. The shape of the hip belt contributes to the comfort provided by the Flash as it never rubbed testers the wrong way. Instead, it cradled the hips to take the load off of the back and shoulders.
By pursuing lightweight construction while including pockets and additional features, REI pushed this piece a bit too far. Durability is the main cause for concern as one of the straps began ripping after only two weeks of use.
The hip belt, due to its reinforced design, mesh construction and unparalleled support.
“When I loosened the shoulder straps and put the full weight of this pack on my hips, I couldn’t believe how comfortable I felt. Not to quote Shakira here, but my hips definitely don’t lie.”
This pack is light and comfortable. Testers of all creeds valued the amalgamation of features and fabrics REI whipped together to upgrade the Flash line.
