Saving Means Signing: Gold Butte Canyons

Footwear brand Keen is advancing a proposition that’s both shockingly simple and casually consequential: collect 100,000 signatures on a single, enormous yellow scroll to protect 5 different U.S. locations as national monuments. With a combined 3 million acres crying out for protection, the boots-on-the-ground, signatures-on-the-scroll roadshow is marching steadily toward Washington, D.C. Powered by Keen but dependent on the people, the LIVE MONUMENTAL petition deserves more than passing interest.

First Proposed Monument: Gold Butte Canyons, Nevada

Gold Butte Canyons, one of five unique settings, combines timeless canyon lands with the primal artistry of Native American petroglyphs.  As sun and moon traverse this rugged-yet-fragile terrain, the designation as National Monument seems obvious.  Shadows and shafts of light skitter across the Nevada wilderness, beckoning those passionate about geology, history and hiking to step into a parallel world.  A place worth protecting – and warranting 100,000 signatures.
