Description

Field Notes: This was the only 27.5” bike we tested (although some others are available with the option), and the only Fat Bike with tires under 4” wide, but still super light for a Fattie, coming in at just over 31lbs. As such the difference was immediately obvious, but the Rocky Mountain Suzi-Q 50 was still every bit a Fat Bike, with the same invincible feel over rocks, mud, sand, weeds, etc., but with a decidedly XC feel in the ride (although the story may have been a bit different if that first ride was over snow or mud).

Pros: We very much appreciated the taller hoops and narrower tires over all but the muddiest and rockiest conditions – this combined with the XC geometry, with very short chainstays gave this Rocky Mountain Fat Bike great speed, particularly up hills or sprinting, especially when standing. We loved the monster 46T climbing “granny” gear in the back, which means only the nastiest grinds were too much for it. Counter to its XC geometry, the slacker head tube angle meant better absorption of compressions and easier climbing over obstacles. Finally, we’re big fans of the XT shifters that all operate with both thumb and forefinger.

Cons: Despite the stiff carbon fork and highly responsive Fat Bike frame, we found the front end a bit slow to respond on descents – probably a result of the very slack head tube angle. And this was exacerbated when hitting the front brake, which resulted in a noticeable pull to the right. This is something we expect in lower-end models, but not at this price point.

Tester Quote: “I know I was riding on 3.8” tires, but compared to the others I thought I was on my Trail bike! And the 27.5 inch wheels make it all that much faster and smoother over obstacles.”

Key Attribute: Stiffness/Efficiency

Bottom Line: This is definitely the best bike in this group for you if you’re not yet ready to fully commit to the Fat Bike or if this will be your only mountain bike. The narrower rims and tires still provide almost all of the benefits of full-on Fat Bike tires, but with better speed and without the weight and handling compromise. And this is especially true if you don’t often ride on snow or sand; although even if you do live in a snowy area, this bike will provide year-round riding, albeit without quite as much float, so you might have a tougher time in deeper and less packed snow.
